Hi Ernst,

First time I have read your blog and I'd sure like to commend you on a great post. The reporting and sources are great and the theme is thought provoking (for those of us who follow and wonder about Twitter's development, at least).

I have thought a lot about why Twitter hasn't yet caught on in the same way in Europe as it has in North America. Almost all my friends back home in the States are twittercrazy, but not many of my friends over here do much with it. It is mostly us nerds who chase social media development around in DK.

I think a big part of it has to do with the difference in the recent history of mobile telephone habits between North America and Europe.

A few years ago when nobody in the US was SMSing, I asked myself "why?" But the reality at that time was that the mobile telephone market was more sophisticated in Europe and that the cost of making voice calls was much more expensive.

Today, the ubiquitous "CrackBerry" (and now the iPhone, too) in North America have significantly changed mobile habits and Twitter is a technology that just kind of filled the need created by these new behaviors. But the Blackberry, at least, doesn't seem to have caught on in the same way and, no matter how quick your thumbs are, it is still much easier to type on a blackberry than a normal mobile phone.

I wonder if Twitter's breakthrough, therefore, has more to do with the way mobile devices are used on this side of the pond than it has to do with the utility of twitter itself. (well, then there is still the language barrier and a million other things)

Thoughts?

Thanks again for a nice post.

Se fx BBC's metahistorie her: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7834755.stm
